Torok River known for its famous Torok Falls has been hugely degraded due to uncontrolled human activities upstream. Population growth over years has led to overexploitation of river resources along the riparian, negatively affecting the river. Apart from the residents being disadvantaged in terms of water for domestic use and their animals, wildlife living in Rimoi Game Reserve have also suffered the consequences.
The objectives of this project center around awareness raising and capacity building among local stakeholders and farmers in communities within the Torok watershed, as the health of the river is a large determinant of agricultural success and productivity. The project aims to restore the ecosystem services of the river basin to improve crop yields, support the growth of fruit trees, and prevent further soil erosion. Planting of fruit trees aims to create a novel source of income for the project beneficiaries, as well as a supplemental food source for the community. Over the long term, this project aims to revitalize Torok Falls, a major tourist destination, thereby bringing greater economic activity back into the region at large.
